  15. <p>     DIED. JOHN BOLTON, 71, astronomer; after a long illness; in
  16. Buderim, Queensland, Australia. Born in England, Bolton was
  17. a radar officer in the Royal Navy during World War II, an assignment
  18. that led to his career in the forefront of a brand-new field,
  19. radio astronomy. Bolton's majorachievement was his 1948 identification
  20. of certain radio waves as emanating from other galaxies. He
  21. also played a crucial role on the team that first identified
  22. quasars, the distant radiant bodies believed to be the cores
  23. of young galaxies.
