- <p> DIED. JOHN BOLTON, 71, astronomer; after a long illness; in
- Buderim, Queensland, Australia. Born in England, Bolton was
- a radar officer in the Royal Navy during World War II, an assignment
- that led to his career in the forefront of a brand-new field,
- radio astronomy. Bolton's majorachievement was his 1948 identification
- of certain radio waves as emanating from other galaxies. He
- also played a crucial role on the team that first identified
- quasars, the distant radiant bodies believed to be the cores
- of young galaxies.
